BRAC and Bangladesh Bank organized a huge reception of 10,000 farmers (Borga Chashis/ sharecroppers) who assembled from all over the country at the Army Stadium in Dhaka on 30 December, 2010. The ceremony was held a year after BRAC initiated a revolving fund of Tk. 500 crore, provided by the central bank, to finance the sharecroppers to have working capital. Executive Director of BRAC Dr. Mahabub Hossain said that his organization has financed 150 crore so far in the past 14 months with the repayment rate of 99 percent. The loan for a year has an interest rate of 10 percent. The Finance Minister Mr. AMA Muhith said 50 percent of the country’s labour force is engaged in agricultural whom “we have to learn to respect as they are the ones who are feeding us”. Agricultural Minister Motia Chowdhury advised the farmers to continue to repay the loans on time. The Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr. Atiur Rahman called the Borga Chashis the main force of agriculture who were so far deprived of access to loan facility.
