Representatives of NGO networks, and the big, mid and small level MFI-NGOs, in a meeting on 06 November 2010 at the NGO Federation, analysed the rate of service charge reportedly finalised by the Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA). The meeting, participated by about 25 organizations, reiterated that 27% rate of service charge will not be viable as the MFIs, unlike the commercial banks, deal with loans of small amount and operate in remote areas resulting in high operational cost. They also pointed out that the declining method of calculation will bring about undue complications both for the borrowers and the field staff. These were repeatedly pointed out during the three-year long negotiations of the networks/NGOs with the Authority.

A group of the networks and NGOs including the NGO Federation, CDF, ASA, BRAC, BURO Bangladesh and MSS met the Executive Vice-Chair of MRA on 07 November, 2010 to convey the disagreement of the sector. The Executive Vice-Chair said that as a result of the negotiations, issues like Service Charge and method of calculation have now been taken out of the Rules ('Bidhimala') and will be issued as a Circular so that these can be reviewed and revised periodically.
