Society for Social Service (SSS) of Tangail has completed a pilot project on begging eradication in two unions of Tangail district. Its survey had identified eight root causes of begging that include death of or abandonment by husband (in case of women), physically and mentally retardation, chronic diseases, old age and illness of the earning member. The annual report on the program says that according to unofficial estimate the number of beggars in the country is approximately five and a half lakh with family members of over two million.

Starting with initial motivation of the targeted persons and social awareness, the main aspects of the one and a half year project were a small grant to the selected persons, various skill development training on sewing, small trade, hawking, poultry and goat rearing etc followed by mainstreaming them in microcredit without or with minimum interest rate. The pilot project covered the able-bodied ones as well as support to the families of the disabled. According to the experience gathered during successful implementation of the program, government collaboration and adequate funding are required for elimination of begging from the society.
