The number of active customers of BURO Bangladesh, a leading microfinance institution providing flexible financial services in the country,  stood at 7 lac 46 thousand 938 at the end of 2009, an increase by 1,44,665, which is 24% higher than the preceding  year with women constituting 99%. It provided financial services to 18,195 villages in 54 districts of all the seven divisions with rapid expansion of branches of 506 from 393 in 2008. Its loan portfolio increased by 27% and savings portfolio by 31% with increase in commercial borrowing by 153%. The year 2009 also witnessed first ever syndicated financing by commercial banks in agricultural sector. The organization has opened a new window for financing the small and marginal farmers. An amount of Tk. 226 crore 30 lac and 50 thousand was disbursed to small and marginal farmers, an increase by 455%. BURO Bangladesh secured 6th position among 100 MFIs in the world in a performance evaluation carried out by the Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX) of Washington DC.
