Cancer Hospital built on public donation: PM opens Ahsania Hospital: 09 April 2014
The Ahsania Mission Cancer and General Hospital was inaugurated by the Prime Minister at Uttara today (09 April). The 15-story 500-bed hospital starts providing treatment to both cancer and the general patients.
The hospital will be run on a 'no-profit no-loss basis' and 30 percent of services will be provided free of cost to the poor. President of Dhaka Ahsania Mission called the project a 'milestone in the philanthropic area' saying the hospital was built with money donated by the general people. The amount of Tk112 crore, received so far, and the donors ranged from Tk 4 crore from Dutch-Bangla Bank, 1500 from a school teacher to Tk 20 from a rickshaw puller.
Tk. 700 core disbursed to tenant farmers: 15 March 2014
Tk.700 crore have been disbursed and seven lac tenant croppers (borga chashi) have benefited from the Tenant Farmer Development Project. This was disclosed by the Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr. Atiur Rahman at a national level dissemination workshop on 15 March 2014 on the baseline and midline study findings on the impact assessment of credit program for the tenant farmers. The project, funded by Bangladesh Bank, is being implemented by BRAC since December 2009. Fifty-five percent of the beneficiaries are now women.
According to findings of the studies, there has been a huge shift in tenancy and dependence on non-institutional sources (friends, relatives) have decreased. The Governor pointed out that this was ‘the only project in the world customized for sharecroppers’.(1 crore=10 million)
